GVBKYS Banquet Update 10Mar08

Please see the note below from Dianne regarding the Banquet this Friday.  We had so much fun last year; you won't want to miss it!  (Note the location change from East to Stewart Lodge; bring skis in case the snow survives the end of week warm up!  Please do RSVP.)

The kids and I will be skiing at MPP North Meadow on Tuesday the 11th from 4:30 to 5:45.  Please join us and take advantage of the late season bonus snow.  Plans for this weekend still TBD.  We should try and do something adventurous similar to last Saturday...that was so much fun shooting Sidewinder!

Subject: GVBKYS End of Season Banquet This Friday

Hello families.

It's hard to believe the GVBKYS season is ending.  You know there will be lots more snow to come in the next few weeks (fingers crossed).  We hope to see you all on the trails when-ever and where-ever!

For now:  Reminder that our End of Year Banquet is this Friday, March 14th at Stewart Lodge in Mendon Ponds Park.  Plan to arrive between 4:30 and 5pm to ski and play games, etc. (conditions permitting).  Supper will be a dish to pass from each family and hot dogs!  Eat time to be approx 6:00pm.  We have a special evening planned with awards, prizes and some special recognitions.  Please RSVP by Thursday in order for us to make sure we have enough of everything and to prepare the annual paper plate awards!

It has been a fabulous season with the kids' skiing skills advancing beyond our expectations.  Thanks to all you parents for your support of the kids and the program.  We look forward to seeing you all at the Banquet!

Dianne

GVBKYS Update 07Mar08

We are still planning to ski at Harriet Hollister Spencer on Saturday morning (9:30) as mentioned earlier this week (below).  The trails have a good base and will get some new snow tonight.  Although there is a winter storm warning in effect, the heavy snow is scheduled to arrive on Saturday PM, with a lull anticipated in the morning after a small accumulation tonight.  So, driving should be OK (certainly easier than driving to Bristol Mtn) and skiing should be good with moderate temps in high 20s.  Remember to allow at least 30 minutes drive from Mendon area.  Fastest way for most people is to come down the West Bloomfield Road/CR 37.  Map link is on our Parents Webpage.

Dianne and I plan on splitting the children that come into two groups and taking each on a tour of the trails.  My group should be able to ski all the trails there one time plus have fun exploring some fun downhill runs thru the woods.  I can't wait to see the look on their faces when they get to the very steep climb on Lower Sidewinder or at the big banked turn on Little Whiteface!  Dianne's group will do a subset based on how far they get.

Skate skiers should plan for skate skiing but bring classic stuff just in case.

Dianne wanted me to pass on that we still have snacks left over and will bring them but will not be bringing hot chocolate.

We hope that many of you can join us tomorrow.  Should be lot of fun with a relaxed atmosphere for all.

GVBKYS Update 04Mar08

BK Festival - Wow.  The weekend BK Festival was just amazing.  The weather cooperated, the volunteers were incredible (I now know whom to hire to run our backyard grill!), and the GVBKYS kids were a pure joy...well, about 90% of the time!  :)  Note that many of the families who came from out of town have already sent us ALL thank you notes of appreciation.

The results, news links and the NYSSRA representative's report are all posted on the Festival Website.

Thanks again to everyone who participated and helped out.  If anyone has any feedback, etc., please be sure to forward to Dianne, Krista or myself.

March Skiing - Skiing in the month of March can be some of the best of the year.  No-wax skis work great in the spring corn snow.  Skating on the firm snowpack is super.  Harriet Spencer and Tug Hill areas usually hold skiable snow into April.  Bristol plans to stay open all month too.  The sun is up and the days are longer.  You get the idea.

GVBKYS in March - Our posted Planning Schedule doesn't include specific practices...but of course we will be skiing and invite you all to come with us.  We will continue Saturday 9:30AM sessions as the rule and possibly other times too.  Stay tuned by email and the website.  Note also that Dianne will start the end of season GVBKYS Awards Banquet planning this week.  The paper plate awards should be a real treat this year!

Saturday 08Mar - We have only skied at Harriet Spencer once this year.  If snow conditions allow, we would like to take the kids on tours of the area, exploring the nooks and crannies and testing ourselves on the BIG hills.  We should also do something fun of the children's choosing...IF they come up with a good idea or two.  It will also be a good opportunity to reflect on the Festival with the kids.  Backup venue will be Bristol; check email or website on Friday.

See you soon!

GVBKYS Update & Festival Preparations 24Feb08

GVBKYS Parents, Coaches and Volunteer Friends,

I trust that everyone had a good President's Week.  We had relatively good practice participation last week and yesterday too, but we know that some families did go on vacation.  Yesterday we had 30 kids or about 50% participation.  It was a great skiing and beautiful day yesterday....and the kids really impressed all the coaches yet again.  I can't tell you how enjoyable it is to coach your children.

Festival Registration - We are currently at only 27 of our 62 kids registered for the BK Festival next week.  With local and statewide registrations coming in late, we continue to be concerned that not only will some of our kids miss the highlight activity of the season (and perhaps of their young lives), but also that our club's organization will end up loosing a significant amount of money.  If you have not done so, PLEASE put the registration form in the mail on Monday so we receive by the Wednesday deadline.  Please email any of the coaches if you have any questions regarding participation.

Festival Week Preparation Schedule - Based on requests from interested parents in the last week, we are now planning skiing and ski preparation sessions this week to assure our speediest racers are ready to do their best.  The ski prep activities are a good idea for any skiers above the Lollipop level (our groups 2/3/4).  We will also have a meeting of the volunteers and officials on Wednesday to assure we are ready to put on the event.  The schedule for this week:

Tuesday - Added Practice at the Witkowski Ski Drome in Victor at 4:30 IF the forecast snow does fall on Monday night/Tuesday as expected.  Classic technique with focus on Fun.  Tuesday night from 6:30 to 8+pm I will be available (also at our house) to Tune-up the Kids Skis and assure the wear and tear of the season is repaired and the skis ready for final glide wax.  I will peel, flatten, detune and apply structure as needed.  This should result in dramatic speed increases for most of the kids skis.  Note that this will only work for racing skis with clear or black bases (not white plastic bottoms) and works best on skis that have had a recent hot wax application.

Wednesday - Festival Leaders, Officials and Volunteers Meeting also at our home at 6pm until 7:30 or so.  We will order pizza or similar.  Goal is to make sure we are ready for the weekend.  We will review the events timeline and discuss any pertinent topic.  Meeting is geared toward the event leaders and officials but any volunteer wishing to help is welcome to attend; please RSVP if coming so we can plan for the food.  The current Volunteers and Officials List is attached with open positions in YELLOW.

Thursday - Added Practice at Bristol Mountain at 5:30.  Free technique.  Will stretch the kids legs and answer any last minute questions.

Friday - Festival Bib Pack Pickup at Holiday Inn Express on Fishers Road Victor (near where Route 96 goes under the NYS Thruway) from 5:30 to 8pm.  PLEASE pick up your family's packet(s) on Friday if at all possible to make Saturday morning a bit less hectic for all.  Will also have final Ski Glide Wax Party at our home from 6 to 8pm.  I will send out weekend glide wax recommendations on Friday for those who can do themselves; this session is for anyone who needs help or just wants it perfect.

Saturday & Sunday - Check the start time schedule for your kids age group(s) on the Festival website and be sure to arrive at Bristol Mountain at least an hour in advance with skis fully scraped and brushed of any glide wax.  (I will have a bench set up to do any final polishing or other as needed.) On Sunday remember it is Classic day and that it may take additional time to complete kick wax application if needed.  Please have the kids ALL WEAR THEIR GREEN GVBKYS HATS both days.

T-Shirts - We handed out GVBKYS T-shirts on Saturday.  Anyone not getting theirs you can pick up at practice on Tuesday or Thursday, or at Festival bib pick up on Friday (only not on Sat).  Adult shirts are also available for $10 each if interested.  Please have the kids WEAR THE GVBYS T-SHIRTS TO THE FESTIVAL BANQUET on Saturday.

GVBKYS Uniforms - Our lycra unis are due in from VOMax this week.  We will let those families that ordered them know when they are here and work out best way to get them to you.

Wow...it seems like a lot going on but it will be a lot of fun like usual.  As always, please contact me if you have any questions or comments.  Thanks!

GVBKYS Update 21Feb08

President's Week Activities - We had good turnouts on Tuesday and Thursday evenings this week for skiing at Bristol Mountain.  For some folks it was the first time they had ever skied 'under the lights', which is generally a surprisingly enjoyable experience.  The kids skiers that participated got some good one-on-one time and I just can't believe how well they they were all skiing by the end of the night tonight.

Saturday Practice - The plan for regular practice on this Saturday will be as originally proposed earlier this week:

The practice plan for Saturday at Bristol Mountain (9:30am) is for separate activities for groups 1/2 and 3/4.  Overall theme is to get everyone ready for the Festival the following week.

Bobcats and Sno Monkeys will have fun practicing the Festival courses for the usual practice times.  Focus will be on familiarity with how the Festival will work and what to look forward to.

Sno Leopards and Cheetahs will start with Freestyle warm up then do speed practice on the World Cup Sprint course.  Lots of repetitions really helps for sprinting.  After about an hour skating, we will take a break in the lodge to refuel while we switch the skis over to Classic.  Then we will practice classic on the distance event course with a couple practice distance intervals.  Skiers in groups 3/4 will sleep well on Saturday night...and ski their best the following week at the Festival!

NYSSRA BK Festival - The Festival preparations are proceeding nicely.  Meeting today with Bristol Mountain went well with all courses and demo areas agreed including how we will 'take over' the Progression Park for an hour on the Festival Saturday; the kids will have a blast on the rollers and skiing GS gates over jumps and banked turns!

Festival registrations are slowly coming up, now at 27 total and 19 from GVBKYS.  We still have a week to go and another 100 parents to remember to send in registration forms!  Please bring your registration info on Saturday if at all possible so we can have the GVBKYS data entry/etc done in advance.  We also need to set our relay teams and I cannot complete that until sure who is participating.

Note that I will be sending out schedule for optional skiing and ski preparation sessions for next week some time in the next few days.  I will try and help interested parents to get the kids skis in 'race trim' for them to assure that slow skis don't lead to a poor Festival experience.

Club Champs Photos - Bill Broderick spent last Saturday capturing photos of our children in action.  He will be creating a website for photo viewing a sending all of you a link.  Bill is also going to help with photography at the Festival.  Thanks Bill!

That is it for tonight.  Thanks again to the parents that brought the kids down to Bristol this week.  See you ALL on Saturday!

GVBKYS Club Championships and Festival Note 16Feb08

Wow!  What a beautiful day at Harriet Spencer!  A surprising 6 inches of new snow, ice still on the trees from the last icing event, fantastic crisp sunshine, a great view from the lookout, and 31 super BK skiers made for a great time.  There were many amazing performances too.  Coach Bob was certainly impressed with all the kids.  Parents you should be proud of how well they are skiing.

Please see the results attached.

31 participants is up from 21 last year...a good increase but is still about the same 50% participation rate.  Of course our target is to have 90+% attendance for our Saturday practices and events, especially on such a perfect skiing day.

Along this line, several parents asked me today if the annual BK Festival our club is hosting (March 1st and 2nd at Bristol Mtn) is appropriate for their children.  I have to admit that I was taken aback at first by the question.  Then I realized that we must not have done a good enough job 'selling' the event to our families, in particular to the families just joining us this year.  WELL...the BK Festival is the highlight of the Bill Koch skiing year in NYS.  It is designed for everyone from the most competitive J3s to the first-year Lollipop Class skier.  In all the years that our family has participated in the Festival, I have yet to see a child or parent that didn't have a great time.  This year with our club hosting the event locally, it is the best time in years for all of our families to participate.  No travel or hotel costs to deter anyone.  See the website for all the info: http://www.xcrochester.com/new/2008MidAtlanticBillKochFestival.htm

So, please take this note as your personal invitation from me to register for and participate in the Festival.  Dianne, Krista, myself plus many volunteers and sponsors are working very hard to put on a great event for ALL of you.  Even if you registered for the GVBKYS program but have only participated infrequently, you should still come.  We had set a planning estimate of 50 of our 62 kids participating; lets try and hit that mark!

GVBKYS Update 14Feb08

GVBKYS update for 14Feb including Saturday plans and forward look to the Festival:

Tuesday Practice Reflection: Thanks to everyone who came to our home for Tuesday practice.  It was too much fun!  We had about 20 kids participate who in addition to getting some Biathlon target practice also learned how to herringbone, ski jump, ski jump crash, do telemark turns, tuck on downhills and slalom through evergreen trees.  The snow was coming down just fast enough to keep the ground covered which was really kinda neat.  We are still finding cold hot dogs in interesting places...and have raised enough money selling left-behind kids clothes on ebay to take a much needed family vacation!  :)

Tug Hill Screamers Relay and Ski-O: So far no one has expressed interest in going to Salmon Hills on Sunday.  Do let me know if you are considering it.

BK Festival March 1/2: A reminder to all that the BK Festival registration period is NOW.  The forms are on our website.  Note that for GVBKYS Bristol Season Pass Holders you can take $10 off the noted fee.  Mail completed forms with payment to our home address or better yet hand them to me on Saturday.  With the festival being local and with all the fun activities planned, every GVBKYS family really needs to plan on attending.   Lets show the rest of NYS how big our club is and how good our hard-working skiers are!

February Break Plans: Some of you have noticed that we did not schedule any practice for next Tuesday...and have suggested with the kids off school that we have some organized activities.  FYI, our original thinking was that with some families inevitably planning vacations and given our expectation for consistent attendance, leaving next week open was the right thing to do.  If you are interested in skiing next week one or more times please let me know on Saturday and we can decide the best plan.

Club Championship Fun Races: Regarding this Saturday, it is the 263rd annual GVBKYS Club Championship Fun Race Day!  Well, maybe not 263rd, but this annual introduction to ski racing day has been going on since before our family started participating in GBKYS 4 or 5 years ago so who knows how many this is.  Here are the details:

* Meet at Harriet Spencer Rec Area at 9:30 sharp.  It is an easier drive than to Bristol for most with much better roads.  It is about a 30 min drive almost due south of Mendon Ponds.  (See our Parents Page on the website for directions if you need them.)  The area is a spectacular venue with amazing views of Honeoye Lake 1300 vertical feet below PLUS some great old-school ski trails that RXCSF maintains and grooms.  Note that like Bristol Summit at a comparable altitude, Spencer is often up to 10 deg F colder than at home so dress (and wax) accordingly.  Also note that the only public restrooms are a challenging 2km ski from the parking area so again plan accordingly.

* All activities will be Free Technique.  That means skate skiing for those that can and classic for Bobcats and most Sno Monkeys.  Fred the Groomer will have the trails in great shape for us including classic set tracks as applicable.

* We will have two Fun Race events; mass start distance races (of varying distances starting just above the parking lot) and match sprint races (on very short out-and-back course at the overlook - same course for all).  Unlike the Festival where the kids are divided into groups by age and sex, we are going to keep our 4 Skier Groups for the events.  This will assure that everyone is skiing appropriate distances and with kids of similar abilities while keeping things simple.  I may make a few group adjustments based on how each child has been skiing and also if you have specific input (please let me know).  For the distance races, Bobcats will go approximately 0.5 km, Sno Monkeys 1.5 km, Sno Leopards 2.5 and Cheetahs 3.5 including the challenging Raccoon Run Trail.

* The coaches will take the groups on a ski tour of the courses before we begin starting at 9:45 sharp.  The distance races will start at approx 10:15 when everyone gets back from the course tours.  Last year we ran the distance races sequentially and some of the kids got cold waiting for their turns.  This year we will try to run the events concurrently and see how it works.

* With Dianne staying home with Adam on Saturday, I will need some parents to help with timing, especially if we run the different classes at the same time.  If you are interested please bring a digital watch and warm boots...and let me know at the start of practice.  Thanks in advance!

* The sprint races will be a hoot and will start as soon as everyone has recovered from the distance races.  (You will want to be sure to bring water and a snack for the kids for this time.  I will be bringing hot chocolate and snacks for the conclusion/awards ceremony.)  We will ski down to the overlook area and group the kids for match sprints.  Everyone will get at least a couple runs down the course about 75 meters/turn around cones/return.  We currently are planning 2 classes only for the sprints; we'll call them the Midgets (1 & 2) and the Veterans (3 & 4).

* After sprints are done, we will ski back to the parking lot for the awards ceremony.  Everyone will get a ribbon for the distance race; the top three in the sprints will each get a second ribbon to reward them for the most blazingest speed.

* Note that I will be using the results from Saturday to help establish our Club Relay teams for the Festival.

I certainly hope that everyone in the club that is not on vacation will participate on Saturday and enjoy the venue at Harriet Spencer.  Let me know if you have any questions, etc.  See you on Saturday!

GVBKYS Update for Saturday 09Feb08 and Tuesday 12Feb08

With not quite enough snow to ski at Mendon, practice for Saturday including a FUN Ski-Orienteering activity will be moved to Bristol Mountain.  I skied there today and the conditions are fine with an unbelievable amount of ice on the trees making for quite a sight.  Groups 3/4 will ski Free Technique.

We will start at 9:30 with the "Score-O" activity starting at about 10.  We will do some ski coaching first for 3 & 4 before they head out on the Score-O course.  I am not an expert...but Eric Barbehenn from the Rochester Orienteering Club assures me that it is great fun and a navigational learning experience for all ages.  We hope that you all can make it!

Some other news/updates:

* The results from the Tug Hill Tourathon are finally posted http://www.winonaforest.com/skiers.html.  There are numerous errors; if you find one let me know and I will consolidate the corrections and forward them to THT.  I guess that I skied OK too for an old coach...

* The problems experienced by the THT organizers have drawn the ire of NYSSRA officials; see the NYSSRA website http://www.nyssranordic.com/.  Interesting dialogue is now going on.  I have personally informed NYSSRA and THT leaders what our experiences were and recommendations for long term improvement.  The bottom line from my perspective is that I asked you all to go there and they let us down.  Fortunately, the kids as usual had a great time and didn't really notice the trail/timing/awards issues!

* Dianne has ordered GVBKYS T-Shirts for all the kids.  They will be here in couple weeks.

* For those who signed up for the custom lycra uniforms Dianne completed the design and color verifications; they are promised to us in time for the Festival.  They will look bright and sharp!  If anyone wants to tag on to the order they can accommodate more.  Let us know.

* The Festival Registration Form is finally ready and posted on the Festival website http://www.xcrochester.com/new/2008MidAtlanticBillKochFestival.htm.  PLEASE NOTE that although the form doesn't mention it, GVBKYS skiers with a valid Bristol Season Pass should take $10 off the event fee; calculate only $25 per child.  We will be talking more about the Festival in the next couple weeks.  Please everyone plan on attending.  Also, we will be recruiting volunteers to help run the event so get ready!

* Next Tuesday is Adam's birthday.  It looks like we might actually get enough snow by then to be able to reschedule the Biathlon/Fun Ski and Hot Dog party from this week to next and celebrate his B-day at the same time.  Sounds like fun to me!  Our big jump sort of survived the melt too!  So for now plan on skiing and shooting from 4:15ish to 5:30ish and having hot dogs after.  We have lights so will not be limited by daylight, at least not for skiing.  Note that Adam is having hernia surgery later next week and this will be his last time skiing with us for a while.  People interested in coming please let me know so we can assure enough food.

That is it for tonight.  See you on Saturday!

GVBKYS Update for Week of 04Feb08

Hello everyone.  Hope there are a lot of happy Giants fans out there...there certainly are a few in the Witkowski house!

What a great time many of us had at the Tug Hill Tourathon.  Despite the fact that the organizers really didn't have their act fully together, the kids (and parents too) seemed to have a lot of fun. The big woods up there is just fantastic and a pleasure to hang out in.  I think we will do again next year.  Do note that at last check the results are amazingly still unpublished.  However, the THT is more about participating than prizes.  I will forward results link to all as soon as available.

Practice on Tuesday is scheduled to be Biathlon Fun and Hot Dogs at our house.  The skiing has been absolutely great the last couple days in our yard (ask Adam how far we have been jumping!) BUT the weather forecast for tomorrow will likely melt the snow and leave nothing but un-skiable ice and mud.  Seems like it rains every Tuesday.  Bill Lilly, Dianne and I talked things over tonight and have decided to CANCEL the scheduled Tuesday practice for this week.  The ice situation will likely make hiking and running unsafe, while the water is not the best for the guns or for our kids to lay down in to shoot.  Tell the kids they deserve a day off after the long ski on Saturday!  We will try to reschedule on another Tuesday later this month or in March.

Note that we did investigate moving practice to Bristol Mountain BUT there is a high school race planned for Tuesday at 5pm - no room on the trail for us until too late.

Looking forward to Saturday, we have a Ski Orienteering Demonstration Event planned.  Since the only skiing looks to be the snowmaking loop at Bristol, we will likely be there.  This may lead to a short demo event...and perhaps we will have to re-think that too.  What ever happens, we will be skiing somewhere!

See you on Saturday!

GVBKYS Update for Week of 28Jan08

We had a good turnout of 38 kids on Saturday for the Mini-Marathon.  The kids were inspirational with their focus and achievements!  Combined the club skied something like 289 miles in one hour!  Wow.  Please congratulate them again for the great efforts...and remind them that the soreness will pass!

The weather forecast for Tuesday is not the best for skiing.  We have not been very lucky for Tuesday skiing since our good start in December.  Tuesday practice will be changed to hiking with ski poles at Dryer Park.  Same 4pm time.

Updates for the Tug Hill event on Saturday:

* We are at 21 kids and holding.  I will send list to THT tonight; let me know today if anyone else is interested in coming.
* I have confirmed that the entry fee is $10 per child regardless of NYSSRA membership.
* The 13k course is listed on the website...but the 8k course isn't.  I will investigate.  None of the courses have maps only narrative.  I will ask this to be corrected also.
* The event is CLASSIC technique only.  The weather forecast indicates that it may be interesting waxing for kick.  To assist we will have a 'kick waxing party' at the Witkowski home on Friday evening from 6:30 to 7:30.
* I will send out additional instructions for glide wax, logistics, how to prep the kids, etc on or about Wednesday when the forecast is more certain.

GVBKYS Weekend Update on 24Jan08

WHAM 13 News - Hope you all were able to see Keena, Ana and Adam on TV on Tuesday.  It was a neat experience...that we are all still trying to recover the missing sleep from!  Thanks again to Steve and Dan from Bristol Mountain for the invite.

Practice Saturday - Since there isn't enough snow for good skiing at MPP, practice for Saturday will be at Bristol Mountain again.  This week will be our second annual Mini-Marathon; the kids will ski laps of the 1.2km loop for one hour to see how far they can go.  We will have a feed table set up on the course with Gatorade and carbos.  Everyone will be asked to set a challenge goal for how many laps they can do, then afterwards we will reward everyone who achieved their goal.  Of course, no sandbagging allowed! :)

Last year the kids really responded to this (like most of the challenges we give them), so it should be a good time for all.  I may do it too and have the kids predict how many laps I can do.  Remember, practice starts at 9:30am!

Bristol Mountain Practices - I will try one last time to convince EVERYONE to come to practices at Bristol.  We have only been averaging 25 or so kids (out of 60 registered for our program) for the sessions we have held there.  It really is a far superior venue than North Meadow in most respects with a modern/well-groomed/wind-protected trail sized just right for Bill Koch ages, a warming facility, rest facilities, and an excitement factor due to the proximity to the top of the Alpine hill.  The kids that have regularly attended love it and are improving SO FAST.  The kids that do not come are missing out and falling behind the rest, also making the coach's jobs that much harder.

THT - An update on the Tug Hill Tourathon.  We have an amazing total of 21 kids going (committed so far) next weekend to Winona State Forest for the THT.  Some are skiing 13k and others 8k; all classic technique.  It is not too late to decide to go.  I will be sending out an email in next couple days with preparation suggestions and possibly try to arrange some car pooling/convoy.  The entry form I forwarded does have some 'issues' but I have confirmed with THT that the kids rate is only $10 for everyone (includes the race and banquet) and that day-of-race registration is OK as long as I send them a list of our skiers attending in advance.

GVBKYS Uniforms - We are still stuck on 8 kids wanting GVBKYS uniforms.  Need 12 for minimum order.  Gotta order in the next couple days to have them in time for the Festival.  Cost is 'about' $80 and the kids should get at least 3-4 years out of them as lycra STRETCHES!  Please let Dianne or I know by Saturday if you are interested.

Dianne is also getting ready to order the T-Shirts for all the kids.  They will have GVBKYS logo on front and the BK Pledge on the back.  They should be real cool.

BK Festival - Finally, our plans for the Festival in March are progressing.  Based on the RXCSF Board meeting this week we can expect the full volunteer support of the Rochester skiing community to execute the event.  We are still have difficulty getting sponsors and donors to sign up.  The sponsorship forms are all posted on the Festival website; if you know of any businesses, organizations or individuals that might to potential sponsors let us know ASAP.  The more sponsor dollars we get, the better we can make the festival while keeping entry fees low.  Cool stuff like banquets, magicians, T-shirts, awards, prizes and electronic "chip" race timing (not to mention trail fees) add up to thousands of dollars.  Every little bit helps.  Thanks in advance.

See you all on Saturday!

GVBKYS Weekend Update on 17Jan08

Practice is ON for Saturday at Bristol Summit Nordic Center at 9:30 sharp.  We will be skiing CLASSIC for all skier groups.  Kick waxing should be easy with temps forecast for low 20's and some new snow; arrive at 9:15 if you need help with waxing.  Swix Blue/Blue Extra or Toko Red should both work.  Apply on site in case temps vary from forecast.

Saturday program will be to start with a refresher of Classic fundamentals (since it has been a while since last outing for most kids) and then we will be conducting the Biathlon Introduction/Demo with Bill Lilly of WNYBiathlon Club.  Plan is to split into the regular 4 skier groups and put the groups thru the Intro one-by-one starting with Bobcats and working to Cheetahs.  Each skier will learn the fundamental concepts of Biathlon, safety protocols, etc., then get to try the sport first by prone position target shooting with safe air rifles then by trying to hit the targets when tired from skiing.  It is one of the hardest challenges in all of sport; the kids typically love it.

The plans for the Winterfest Fun Race at MPP Stewart Lodge on Sunday morning (arrive by 10:30) are still proceeding.  We will continue to monitor the weather but I do expect enough snow will fall by then to safely do skating/classic on the grass surface.  I will keep you updated via email/website.  Please do plan on attending; Dianne has RIBBONS for all skiers!

GVBKYS Update for Week of 14Jan08

With the current "lack" of snow conditions but possible snow on the horizon, it is a bit difficult to confirm definitive plans for this week.  Here is best info as of now:

Tuesday - We will not practice at the Witkowski home as planned.  As discussed with parents in attendance on Saturday, if Bristol Mountain opens the Nordic Center on Tuesday (and we are still hopeful), we will change practice to meet there for skiing at 6:30pm sharp.  If they do not open, we will meet at MPP Quaker Pond for a run/hike with ski poles UNLESS there is enough snow to ski (not looking likely).  Please check the Bristol Mountain website on Tuesday afternoon to see where we are going.  I will try and also send out a note via email if possible mid day.

Saturday - Current plan is for practice at Bristol Mountain and reschedule of Biathlon Demo and possibly Ski Orienteering Demo (but that requires enough natural snow to ski off of the main loop).  May change if we get snow at MPP.

Sunday - MPP Winterfest date with Fun Ski Races at Steward Lodge area with registration at 10am.  The races will be short sprints around the field there with number of laps varying by age group.  No entry fee; ribbons for all participants.  Everyone should plan on attending IF we get snow in town.  It will be some of the kids first fun race so we will all need to be there to cheer everyone on!

GVBKYS Practice for Saturday 12Jan08 - Posted 10Jan08

I wish I had better news, but it appears that Bristol Mountain will not be ready for skiing on Saturday.  Hopefully they will learn from this and set a deeper base in the future to survive the inevitable-for-Rochester January thaws.

So...we will have practice at the regular 9:30 time at MPP North Meadow.  Practice will be a mix of games/drills and hike (groups 1/2) / run (groups 3/4) with classic ski poles.  We did this a lot last year and we know we can handle it for this week!  Lets try for perfect attendance.  The long range forecast is still good so hopefully this will be the only Saturday practice off of snow for the rest of the season.

The coaches will use Saturday also as an opportunity to get Ks for Kochers update on all the kids.  Please bring your tracking sheets so we can compile and recognize (during snack/cocoa time) the children who have skied the most.

John and I will also pull out and attempt to update the Skills Charts with groups 3/4.

See you Saturday!

GVBKYS Practice CHANGES for Saturday 05Jan08 - Posted 03Jan08

We are changing the practice plan for Saturday due to a) 13+ of our skiers are going to Salmon Hills for the Harry Potter event, b) there is a snowshoe race at Harriet Spencer on Saturday morning with over 100 participants expected, likely congesting the parking lot AND trails, and c) the snow is back in North Meadow...so why not use it!  So, here is the plan:

* Meet at 9:30 at MPP North Meadow.  Note that there are currently both skate and classic lanes set.

* Dianne, Krista and I will be coaching at Salmon Hills; John and Jill will lead the practice with organizational help from Larry Bernstein and hopefully other parents that can stay/ski during practice.

* Jill and Larry will take Bobcats and Sno Monkeys and lead a fun day of games and a ski tour.

* John will take Sno Leopards and the Cheetahs (not going to SH) on a tour to the water tower then games and practice on the hill in the meadow.  Skiers can choose either skating or classic but note that I won't be there to help with any kick waxing (and not sure the wax box will make it either).

* Larry will bring the snacks and cocoa.

* The weather forecast is for pleasant/warm weather so everyone should have a great time!

We used a similar approach last year while traveling to an event out-of-town and the program didn't miss a beat.  Will do same first weekend in Feb when we travel to the Tug Hill Tourathon.

Anyone who is still considering going to Salmon Hills please contact Lori Vezendy ( bigborebob@msn.com ) ASAP today and I am sure she can fit you in.  As of last night she was at 25 kids registered with 48 spots for the Tournament.  Note that most folks going up are staying at the Pulaski Super 8 Motel on Saturday night (only).

We are working to reschedule both the Biathlon and Ski-Orienteering demo sessions.  Right now it looks like Saturday 19Jan08 looks good to do both on the same day; we will probably do it at Bristol Mtn Summit Center to assure good snow and to practice for the demos included as part of the Mid A Festival in March.  Stay tuned!

Happy skiing!

GVBKYS Practice Summary and Harry Potter Weekend at SH - Posted 29Dec07

Only a so-so turnout today at practice at revised Bristol venue (approx 50%).  Those in attendance experienced great ski conditions for both skate and classic, plus a super XC atmosphere with 3 buses of high school racers plus many others on the trails.  The Bobcats/Sno Monkeys had a blast finally getting to use the tow ropes, while the Leopards and Cheetahs did a long distance ski tour and practiced applying the techniques learned the last two days at the Ski Camp.  I know our Cheetahs group had a blast shooting the downhill at full speed each time!  All participating skiers are improving at an amazing pace and continue to have smiles on their faces!  Can't ask for more.

Unfortunately, we were not able to conduct the Biathlon Demo today.  Bristol Mountain is still working to get the OK from their insurance provider to allow the demo and Biathlon in general.  It is planned to have the OK resolved prior to the Festival.  In the meantime, we will reschedule the activity once we know the snow at Spencer has returned.  Thanks to Bill Lilly from WNYBiathlon for his flexibility in this situation.

FYI below is the invitation to the Harry Potter Weekend as mentioned today at practice.  Dianne and I are NO LONGER planning to attend the event on New Years Day in Old Forge, instead considering the Salmon Hills activities.  It sounds like a lot of fun!

Salmon Hills is about a 2 hour drive from Mendon mostly on I90 and I81.  Note that Salmon Hills trail fee is $7 per youth/day.  Ski conditions there are currently good with lake effect snow in the forecast for tomorrow and general snow on New Years Day so next weekend should be great.  (Think of trails like the ones at Bristol only 20k of them...not just 1.2k...and with some really fun/challenging hills both up and down!  Plus beautiful views of the Salmon River Reservoir.)

The Salmon Hills BK organizers are asking for RSVP by Thursday.  We will be watching the local weather to determine GVBKYS plans for next Saturday (scheduled for Ski Orienteering at Spencer but currently poor ski conditions there and at Mendon).  In parallel we will determine our participation on Saturday and/or Sunday at Salmon Hills.  Please contact me if you have any interest in the Harry Potter Weekend activities.  It would be great if we could show up with a good contingent to support Bill Koch Skiing!

GVBKYS Venue Change to Bristol Mtn for Practice on 29Dec07

Due to the limited snow depth at Harriet Spencer combined with the forecast for rain overnight we need to change the location of GVBKYS practice for tomorrow (Saturday 29Dec07) to Bristol Mountain.  There is still skiing at Spencer but we would not be able to set classic tracks for the Bobcats & Snow Monkeys.  It is a similar situation at MPP North Meadow.  However, the trails at Bristol Mtn have been fabulous the last two days for our Ski Camp and we expect the same tomorrow despite the weather; it is forecast to change back to light snow in time for our 9:30 practice start!

Remember to leave in time to get there before 9:30 start time.  It takes about 30-40 minutes to drive from Mendon or Victor so plan accordingly.  Directions link at our website if needed.  Watch for ice on the entrance road.  Also remember to bring your season passes or plan to purchase a trail pass.  It is well worth it!  Don't forget the heated lodge with food and beverages, rentals, etc.

Practice tomorrow will be focused on FUN as many of our skiers have worked very hard the last two days to improve their technique and speed.  We are still hoping to be able to include the planned Biathlon introduction (with Bill Lilly from WNYBiathlon) and are awaiting the OK from Bristol management to proceed.  Either way we will see you tomorrow!

GVBKYS Update for Holiday Week 26Dec07

I hope that you and all the children had a great Christmas/Holiday!  Our family enjoyed the break but did manage to squeeze in skiing Monday at Bristol (WOW fast on tilled ice!) and yesterday in the Witkowski Ski Drome.  Today we might check out Harriet Hollister Spencer to assure we are ready for Saturday session there.  Grooming at Spencer should be going on this morning.  I heard that MPP North Meadow still has snow that might be OK to check out this PM after the ice warms up.

GVBKYS News update including info for this week:

* Final count was 42 kids on Saturday for the Holiday Tree Session.  I did receive some nice pics from several parents and will post them ASAP on the website.

* Classic Technique "Training Camp" is on for tomorrow (Thursday) at Bristol from 9 to noon.  Skate Technique Camp on Friday same time/place.  Open to all GVBKYS participants that are ready for focused technique and fitness training.  Guests are also welcome ($10 per day, can be applied to full GVBKYS participation fee if interested, responsible for own trail passes, I will bring sign-up sheets requiring parents to sign waiver).  Planned agenda for each day will be:

Before 9:00      Check In & Kick Waxing (Thursday only)
   9:00 - 9:15      Introductions & Warm Up Game
   9:15 - 10:00    Technique Drills
   10:00 - 10:15   Video Capture (Diagonal Stride, Double Pole, DP w/ Kick - V1, V2, V2 Alternate)
   10:15 - 10:45   Lodge; BYO snack/drink, Video Analysis
   10:45 - 11:45   Speed Development Games/Drills
   11:45 - Noon    Wrap Up

* Regular Saturday Practice still on for Harriet Spencer @ 9:30 (Free Technique for groups 3/4; will try to assure classic tracks set for groups 1/2).  Bill Lilly from Western NY Biathlon will be joining us; all skier groups will get to try target shooting on skis with air rifles.  In between the Biathlon demo we will explore the park as it will be many folks first time to the very interesting and beautiful venue.  Please allow enough time to get there; approximately 30 minutes south of Mendon Ponds.  Directions are posted on the Parents Page on our website.

* We are re-thinking going to the BK Fun Race at Old Forge on New Years Day as no other families have expressed interest.  We may substitute the BK free technique event at Salmon Hills Ski Resort (closer only two hours away north of Syracuse) on Sunday Jan 6th.  Dianne and I helped to develop the Salmon Hills resort over ten years ago and can attest to GREAT SKIING there along with a great group of kids/parents/coaches involved with their BK program.  Lets talk about it on Saturday at practice.

* Regarding uniforms, we have 6 kids as definite and two more probable.  If we can get just 4 more to say GO we can get serious and place an order in time to get them for use most of the season.  Here is a link to the company we are talking to http://www.vomax.com/ .  Again, cost for three-color/two piece lycra with GVBKYS lettering (no fancy sublimated graphics) will be less than $100.  Please let Dianne I know if interested.  Minimum order is 12.

See you soon!

GVBKYS on Saturday 22Dec07 and During the Holiday Period  -  20Dec07

Happy Holidays!  Yes, the holiday season is here...and that means there is even more time for skiing!  Hopefully...

So, here is the scoop for GVBKYS for the next week and a bit beyond:

* We had 20 kids show up on Tuesday, by far our biggest weekday turnout ever.  Apologies to all that Dianne and I were spread a bit thin.  In the end I think most everyone had fun with less structure and more skiing.  I know the Cheetahs I was with had a blast shooting Fawn Hill a couple times!  We will try to get more coaching help going forward if we know that we will have that level of participation continue.

* This Saturday is the Annual Holiday Tree Ski.  We will be at MPP North Meadow with groups 3 & 4 skiing freestyle.  With some luck that will be nice classic tracks for the Bobcats and Sno Monkeys too.  Dianne has some nice surprises in store for the kids so try to make it if you can.  The activity plan will be much less formal than recent weeks with games, a ski tour, the tree sighting and cocoa.  It is supposed to be mild so relaxed day for all.  Perhaps we can finally build that jump on the hill?

* No organized skiing next Tuesday on Christmas Day.

* Next Thursday and Friday is our "Holiday Ski Camp" at Bristol Mountain with 3 hour sessions on Classic and Freestyle respectively.  It will be focused for our Sno Leopards and Cheetahs groups, although Bobcats and Sno Monkeys are welcome to come and ski with parents and perhaps try some of the activities.  We had originally planned for these sessions to be open and marketed to the general public but never completed that level of preparation (just keeping up with our 57 kids has been tough enough :-)).  However, I have been contacted by a couple non-GVBKYS families regarding participation, along with some of you asking about being able to bring other friends and family.  So, what we will do is open the sessions to other experienced skiers (no outright beginners) for a token fee and require a signed parental waiver.  Regarding the itinerary, each day will have the drills we have been doing plus more games and with a mid-session water & carbo break in the lodge.  We may also try short time trials to get ready for racing.  I will complete the Activity Plans and also a Registration Sheet for non-GVBKYS participants ASAP in next couple days and post them.  I would also like to ask all of you to reply back IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO ATTEND (only; no regrets) so we can get an estimate of participation.  It should be great and I hope to see most of the group 3/4 kids there.

* A week from Saturday is a regular practice, our first at Harriet Spencer Rec Area this year.  Freestyle technique for 3/4.  It will also include Biathlon demo/participation for any/all of the interested kids (and parents too!).  For anyone who is unfamiliar with Biathlon, you won't believe how the kids take to the mix of skiing and target shooting (using very safe air rifles and close-range targets).  Our partners from Western NY Biathlon Club will be helping and ensuring safety.  Our RXCSF trail grooming team has started grooming Spencer with all trails now packed for skating so conditions should be great!

* We are planning to head to Old Forge on New Years Day for their annual BK Resolution Day races at McCauley Mountain.  This was the site of the Festival last year and is a great place for kids to ski.  The event doesn't start until 1:30 PM so no time pressure to get there.  It would be great if we had a small contingent from GVBKYS in attendance.  We can perhaps car pool, etc., and I will help prep the skis for max speed.  Please see me on Saturday to discuss if you may interested.

* Based on the interest of several families in addition to ours, Dianne has been searching for affordable ski uniforms for our "team".  We are working with a company by the name of VO Max that is owned by a former friendly-competitor of mine from Massachusetts.  We will be able to get 2-piece/3 color lycra suits with GVBKYS lettering for under $100 IF we can put together an order of qty=12 or more.  Our options include offering them for individual purchase, having GVBKYS buy them and leasing them to our skiers on a season-to-season basis, or a combination of the two.  Parents would be able to get them too as they have both adult and children's sizes (down to size 8).  Please see Dianne on Saturday if you have opinions and/or interest regarding ski suits.

* Finally, we have selected a Festival Theme winner and will announce the winning entry on Saturday during the snack/cocoa time.  Thank you to everyone who took the time to brainstorm and enter your kids ideas.

See you soon!

Tuesday Ski, Wednesday Wax Session, Summit Center Review 10Dec07

Updates on the subject topics:

* The ski tour for tomorrow (Tuesday) will be on for 4pm unless it is raining hard.  Will be classic tour (no skaters) starting at the MPP Quaker Pond Parking Lot just west of the intersection of Pond and Douglas Roads.  Check the trail map link on the website if you need.  Use your judgement regarding the weather; note that the bigger/faster skiers will have no problems in light rain staying warm.  Bobcats may not do as well.  Older/no-wax skis may be a good idea; that is what I am bringing for our family.  Dianne and I are both planning to be there...my first weekday practice ever!

* We will have a Wax Demo and waxing session on Wednesday at our home from 7:30 to 9ish.  So far about 5 or 6 parents have expressed interest.  Gives me excuse to clean the waxing room.  Directions also on website.

* Several GVBKYS families including ours had great times skiing at Bristol yesterday.  After a LONG wait for our passes at the base lodge, the drive to the summit was not so bad but plan for at least 20 minutes.  The skiing on the snowmaking loop was GREAT compared to Mendon with flat/fast skate lanes and firm classic tracks.  The non-snowmaking trail was open for skate but a bit thin for new skis.  We also enjoyed exploring around the tops of the Alpine trails.  The lodge is warm and spacious with skate ski rentals available for any parents interested in trying it.  They served lunch from an outdoor grill too!  All in all, I think you will all appreciate the additional venue...we will find out on Saturday!

Have a good evening and see some of you tomorrow!

Bristol Summit Center OPEN, Saturday Practice Lessons 09Dec07

FYI, the Summit Center at Bristol Mountain is now open.  Here is link: http://www.bristolmountain.com/news.asp?action=view&ID=109

Great practice yesterday at Mendon with just enough snow to cover most rocks and 41 children in attendance.  My group managed to find the worst/icy trails to ski on but what can you do!  Hope the kids enjoyed it!  Please let the coaches and I know if you have any feedback or questions for us.

Improvement opportunities already identified include:

* We did have some kids find their way into the wrong groups which we all need to ensure doesn't happen again.  (I am planning on re-publishing the Groups List later this week to all; may make a couple adjustments also based on observations yesterday.)

* Coach John and I had miscommunication over the meeting place for drills for the Cheetah and Leopard groups.  We will use radios in future as needed (assuming I can remember to bring them!).  This will also help with the group split problem.

* All parents and kids need to double check equipment before leaving the house to make sure bringing the right stuff and no damage, etc.  I will try to bring better tool box in future too.

* We need to help the parents more with ski waxing.  Dianne and I decided last night to offer another ski wax seminar if there is sufficient interest, including hot waxing the kids skis for you the first time.  Anyone interested in waxing THIS WEDNESDAY EVENING at our wax room in Victor please let me know by reply to this mail.

That is it.  Thanks again for letting us have fun skiing with your kids.  Try and get them out on skis during the week as possible, even in the yard or whatever works.  See you on Tuesday or next Saturday!

GVBKYS Practice Update 06Dec07

After much thought and including dialogue with several of you, we have decided to move the practice on Saturday to MPP North Meadow.  The idea of scheduling the early December practices at Bristol was based on recent snow history...or the lack thereof in December in Mendon.  With the snow coming early, why not move practice closer to most of our homes?  That being said, some of us are eager to ski Bristol, so we will still plan on skiing there next week.  Plus, there will likely be other times that we have to move a scheduled practice at MPP or even Spencer to Bristol later in the season.

The conditions at North Meadow today were good for early season skating but without classic tracks.  (The full-time groomer will be starting in a week and classic tracking will improve then.)  Forecast is for 1-2 inches on Friday which should refresh the skate lanes in time for a moderate temperature day on Saturday.  In other words, it should be nice there on Saturday!

Due to the track conditions, we will change the Sno Leopards/Cheetahs technique from classic to skate.  These groups will use the entire meadow trails to build a good skating technique foundation for the season.  Note we plan for now to switch the technique for the 15th from skate to classic to balance this change.  The tracks at Bristol should be in great shape by then and hopefully the lodge will be open too.

The Bobcats and Sno Monkeys will ski classic technique as planned, using the field areas to the northeast of the meadow.  We will ski-in some tracks in a learning area like we did for everyone last year.  The kids will have fun skiing slalom thru the trees in the wooded field off Canfield near the park entrance.  They had a blast doing last year.  Krista and Dianne have been working on the lesson plans all week and are excited to get all the newbies and little ones skiing!

We hope this change helps everyone have a bit less stress on Saturday!  Do let me know if you have any questions or concerns and I will address them ASAP.  See all of you on Saturday at 9:30 at the normal Canfield Road/North Meadow ski area by the small kiosk.  Park carefully and those with small children will want to choose the south side of the road to minimize road crossing risk.

Coach Bob

PS - Almost forgot...We need your help.  We need to come up with an interesting and pertinent THEME ASAP for the Bill Koch Festival we are hosting in March.  Please bring any ideas you or your children might have to practice on Saturday.  We will include brief discussion about it at the start of practice during announcements.

GVBKYS Practice Update 29Nov07

Saturday December 1st Practice Update – This will be the first practice this year including ALL SKIER GROUPS so get ready for lots of activity with over 50 children now registered!  We will meet at Mendon Ponds Park Beach Area (Park Map) at 9:30am SHARP with program registration from 9:15 to 9:30.  (We will also be collecting Bristol Trail Pass and NYSSRA Applications during this time from those families still have not submitted them.)  The weather forecast is for cold temps and snow flurries but not enough snow to ski on.

The focus of the session will be to get everyone to be ready to ski on snow at Bristol Mountain on Dec 8th.  Be ready to play, hike/run and for new skiers learn the basics to be ready to ski.  Bring smiles, running shoes/light hiking boots and classic length poles.  Parent Meeting #2 will start after the formal practice is over and include open Q&A and a session with demo on ski equipment care and waxing.  Bring warm clothes as we will be outdoors and also so the kids can play on the playground during the parent meeting.

Practice Itinerary:

9:15 – 9:30                    Registration

9:15 – 9:40                    Warm-up Games

9:40 – 9:45                    Split into Skier Groups; Introduce Coaches and Skiers

9:45 – 10:45                  Group Activities (specific to each group)

10:45 – 11:30              Parent Meeting; Program Update, Q&A, Equipment Care Demo

See you all on Saturday!

GVBKYS Update Friday 16Nov07

Hello to all GVBKYS Parents!

Quick email update for this week:

* We had great turnout of approx 25 kids for first practice last week including some Bobcats/Sno Monkeys for which practices in Nov are decidedly optional.  We worked on camaraderie, general fitness, the "C" body position, leg spring and the low skating position...and the kids thought we were just playing in the woods!  Really, it was a pleasure seeing them all have such fun!

* This Saturday we will meet at Dryer Park in Victor (link on website if you need directions) at 9:30 to continue working on the above items.  Will have two groups again to accommodate Bobcats and Sno Monkeys that do show up.  New venue should keep things fresh for parents and kids alike.  With colder weather and snow showers in the forecast, will need to start on time.  I will be there about 9:15 to collect any registration information or Bristol Trail Pass Applications.  Note that starting this week I will be asking the kids to sign in so we know exactly who attended the practice.  Sign in will be at my black Nissan Pathfinder.  Remember to dress in layers, wear running shoes and bring classic poles!

* We are up to 43 registered children, well on our way to goal of 50+.  Fantastic!  We expect to have more registrants this weekend and again at first official practice for all on 01Dec07.  It is not to late to encourage other families to join us!

* I have been busy working on the GVBKYS website http://xcrochester.com/new/GVBKYS.htm.  Have added lots of background information to the Parent's page that may be of interest and will continue to do so in concert with our scheduled Parent Meetings.  Anyone who missed Parent Meeting #1 can catch up by reading the sections on Skier Readiness and Equipment (clothing and skis, etc.).  Let me know if you have any questions or have ideas on how to improve the website.

See many of you tomorrow!

GVBKYS Update Friday 09Nov07

Hello to all.  You are receiving this email because you either participated in GVBKYS in 2006/7 and/or have signed up to participate this year.  We will remove any non-participants in the 2007/8 program concurrent with the start of snow skiing in December or before if you request in reply.

Dianne and I wanted to give everyone a quick GVBKYS status update.  Here goes!

* We had our first Parent Night on Wednesday, covering topics for program readiness such as program overview, equipment selection and clothing.  We had a decent turnout and many good questions came up.  As a result, we have done some fine tuning of the Skier Groups, in particular to the new Sno Monkey group.  In that case, we increased the age range to include all new skiers.  Details related to the discussions have been posted on a new Parent's Page on our website, including links to venue and equipment supplier websites.  Check it out:  http://www.xcrochester.com/new/GVBKYS.htm

* We also had several prospective parents show up on Wednesday.  The meeting was not originally intended to be a general information meeting; I hope that we didn't scare any potential new families away!

* So far we have about 35 children registered for this year, with quite a few more either in the mail or planning to sign up tomorrow or soon thereafter.  It looks like we will end up with more than the 45 we had registered last year!  Our plan is to never really close registration, HOWEVER we would prefer is everyone who is going to participate to register soon.  Please help us all out too by recruiting additional skiing families to participate with us.

* Speaking of Saturday, we are starting our first practice at 9:30 am at Mendon Ponds Beach Parking Area.  Original plan was to take the Sno Leopards and Cheetahs (only) for a trail hike after getting re-acquainted.  Some families have inquired if the smaller/new skiers can come also.  So, we will have two groups of hikers tomorrow and all are welcome.  However, Bobcat and Sno Monkey parents should not feel compelled to participate if you had other plans.  Remember to bring classic ski poles if you have them.  We will arrive around 9:15 to accept registrations.

* Also Saturday, we will have Team Equipment event at Park Ave Bikeshop.  Dianne and I will be there from 1 to 3 to assist you.  Park Ave has an improved inventory of junior equipment this year (we asked them to do this!) and also will be offering product at a significant savings.  I have the team price list and everything is below Minimum Advertised Prices so if they have what you want it is unlikely you can find it new anywhere on the Internet for less.

That is it.  As always, feel free to reply with any questions or comments.  I hope to see many of you tomorrow!
